Linking Hertfordshire with the Nordic Countries
Do you live in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex or North London? Do you have links with, or are you interested in Sweden, Denmark, Norway or the other Nordic Countries? If so, we would like you to join us. Our membership includes not only Swedes, Danes and Norwegians by birth, but also people with family, friends or business connections in the Nordic countries. Others have travelled in Scandinavia or are interested in the area, its cultures and its peoples.Learn More
Our programme of events and speakers is aimed at all comers. Whatever your interest, you are welcome to join us, either as a member or as a visitor to any of our meetings. We hold evening meetings once a month from September to December and February to May at St Mary’s Church Hall, Marshalswick, St Albans AL4 9QA, usually at 7.45pm for an 8.00pm start. Our programme covers Scandinavian and local topics and meetings take the form of a talk or activity followed by a chat over refreshments. Society traditions include our Julefest celebration in December and an annual summer outing.Learn More
The Odense Link - St Albans has a long-standing link with Odense in Denmark. According to one story, 11th century Danish monks studying at St Albans Abbey, then a Benedictine Monastery, took the bones of St Alban with them when they returned to Odense and placed them in the crypt of their new church of Saint Alban (Sct Albani Kirke).Learn More
We have provided links to Friends of HASS and to relevant local and national services, including universities that teach Scandinavian languages, suppliers of Scandinavian goods and places to eat Scandinavian food. We hope you find this useful.Learn More
In addition to our published programme of events for our 2018 - 19 season we plan to hold informal daytime get-togethers and organise outings to exhibitions and concerts with Scandinavian content. This season begins on 12 September and our 2019 - 2020 programme will begin on 11 September 2019. The Annual Subscription is £20.00 per member plus, at each meeting attended, a donation towards the cost of refreshments of £2.00 per member and £3.00 per visitor.
